Crime In Iraq Vs. Washington DC

By Cliff Kincaid

September 12, 2003

The Federalist, a conservative Internet news service, claims that the streets of Baghdad, Iraq, are safer than those of Washington, D.C. On a recent weekend, there were three more murders in Washington, D.C. It says, "The District’s strict gun-control laws did nothing to prevent these murders. Two of them were committed with knives."

Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld came in for criticism weeks ago for saying something similar—that Baghdad has less violent crime than the U.S. capital. "You’ve got to remember that if Washington, D.C. were the size of Baghdad, it would be having something like 215 murders a month," Rumsfeld said. "There’s going to be violence in a big city."

This I did not know. Even I was hoodwinked into thinking that it is safer to be in DC [from where I am now writing] than in Baghdad. There may be some qualifications on this of course. It is probably not as safe to be a Westerner, but for ordinary Iraqis it most likely is safer.

At a guess, it may be safer to be a westerner in Baghdad than a white tourist in certain parts of DC. That's always been true of New York. There are some parts of New York where white just don't go. It's better than it was under Dinkins, but it's still true that prudent people don't just wander around in any part of a big city.

Last time we were in DC, there was a fire in the Metro and a shootout at the zoo. Since we live in Richmond, we didn't find that unusual.

(Richmond is only a temporary name until we rename everything for Arthur Ashe. I heard a local soccer team was considering "Arthur Ashe Kickers"...)
